Susan Sontag wrote a book called The Volcano Lover. It's a vast and delicious depiction of the life of a man who was the British Ambassador to Naples prior, during and after the french revolution.

In most of the stories in which a statue comes to life, the statue is a woman - often a Venus, who steps off her pedestal to return the embrace of an ardent man. Or a mother, but then she is likely to remain in her niche.
